Systems Safety and Verification Engineer

Website AstraQua

Location: Los Angeles, CA or Louisville, KY

About the work

Turn safe AI intentions into explicit requirements, operating boundaries and reviewable test evidence. Work across AstraSense and AQFM to connect system safety, integration and verification, while keeping assurance claims proportional to the evidence.

What you will do

  • Define system requirements, interfaces, operating assumptions and measurable acceptance criteria with engineering leads.
  • Develop hazard-analysis inputs, safety constraints, deterministic supervisory checks and fault-response requirements appropriate to each application.
  • Create traceability from requirements to simulation, bench, software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop tests; record results, deviations and unresolved limitations.
  • Specify checks for health/capability estimates, stale or uncertain evidence, rejected actions, operator intervention and cases with no supported recovery option.
  • Coordinate with integration and test engineers on test readiness, instrumentation, data capture and reproducible test configurations.
  • Organize requirements and verification evidence relevant to applicable DO-178C, DO-254 or DO-160 work, without implying that a prototype or the AI as a whole is certified.
  • Establish change control for verified modules, regression testing before hardware deployment and a clear record of assumptions affected by each change.

What you bring

  • Experience in systems engineering, verification, validation or safety-related software development.
  • Ability to write precise requirements and turn them into repeatable tests and evidence.
  • Strong technical communication and a practical understanding of software failure modes and system integration.

Useful additional experience

Aerospace or automotive safety methods, model-based systems engineering, fault injection, software quality assurance, robotics testing, requirements tools, HIL/SIL workflows or test-data analysis.

First 90 days: scope to agree

Agree a scoped first-90-day objective: an assurance and verification plan for one capability, including operating boundaries, a requirement-to-test matrix, a reproducible acceptance test set and an evidence-gap register. Coordinate a HIL/SIL test with the relevant engineering owner.

About AstraQua

AstraQua is developing a modular autonomy architecture with AQFM as its shared intelligence foundation. Specialized agents contribute perception, reasoning, health and coordination. AstraSense is the health-intelligence agent, with electrified aviation as an initial research application; it connects condition and remaining capability with mission decisions. Our approach to safe AI emphasizes defined operating boundaries, deterministic safety controls, operator authority and behavior designed for verification and validation.
